Northeast Ohio writer Thrity Umrigar has a new novel out, it's a tough but great read.
'Honor' follows a young female journalist named Smita, as she returns to her homeland of India, to cover a religious confrontation is a small rural village.
That might not seem like much - but the confrontation at the center of the book involves two Hindu men killing the Muslim man who marries their sister. They burn him alive - and as she attempts to rescue him, she is badly burned and disfigured.
'Honor' is searing and tragic, but it's also beautiful and uplifting.
It's received plenty of acclaim since it's release in January - and is in fact the 9th novel from Umrigar, who's also a Professor at Case Western Reserve University.
Tonight, she speaks at a virtual event organized by the Cleveland Heights - University Heights Library and Mac's Backs.
Ideastream Public Media Producer Drew Maziasz sat down with Umrigar yesterday to discuss 'Honor'.
