Spot on Science: James Webb Telescope New Discoveries

Astronomers are peering deeper and deeper into space, with the clearest vision ever, thanks to the James Webb Telescope.

Part of the telescope’s mission is to look for planets outside our solar system. These are called exoplanets.

The James Webb Telescope can peer into the atmosphere of an exoplanet as it passes in front of its parent star.

Even just a few months after its launch the James Webb Telescope is already sending back images of far-off galaxies and dying stars.

Scientists are seeing further into space, and learning more about how planets, stars and galaxies form, and perhaps, whether life exists on other worlds.

Class Discussion Questions:

  • Choose a planet in our solar system. If you could rename it based on its characteristics, what name would you choose? Explain your answer.

  • Have you ever been curious to know just how telescopes work?

  • If you could schedule the James Webb Telescope to take pictures of a planet or start in our solar system, where would you send it?
