You all have been up to some good work involving vets. This week, we’re awarding our A Plus to students who are taking an extra step to provide help to some veterans who need it most.
For the past several years, students at Windsor Elementary School in Elyria have held drives to collect items and funds for the Lorain County Valor Home, which provides transitional housing for homeless veterans.
It began in 2014, with third graders earning money for new mattresses through a reading program.
The next year, the whole school got involved. They collected pillows, socks, water, gas cards and the like. Eventually, students began collecting change to purchase winter items - think gloves and scarves.
Windsor managed to increase donations each year, eventually allowing them to buy a freezer, pans, bed sheets and an ice maker.
The school holds an annual Veterans Day assembly, which includes the high school’s ROTC color guard and madrigal singers, trumpets playing taps and military speakers. Local veterans are invited to attend.
There’s also a wall of honor, where students can recognize members of the military whom they know.
Student Jace said of the event “The assembly was cool. I'm glad my dad got to speak about his time in the army. I'm happy we did a project to help the veterans at Valor Home.”
This year they began fundraising for Honor Flight Cleveland too. The organization provides veterans with an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials honoring their service. Students raised about $1,550 for both organizations!
Way to go Windsor! We’re proud to award you this week’s NewsDepth A Plus.
