How $1 Saved an Artist Enclave in Cleveland Heights

Cleveland Height's Coventry PEACE campus has a new owner and a stable future. Local arts and other nonprofit groups have been leasing space in the former elementary school from the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District. But with mounting repair bills for a building it no longer needed, the school board wanted to sell the property. That left the organizations-in-residence fearful they would have to leave. This week, a one-of-a-kind deal was struck-- the building and its adjacent playing field and playground were sold to the CH-UH library for just $1. In turn, the library will allow the nonprofits tenants to stay.  To get the details on the deal and what the new ownership arrangement means for the community, ideastream's Rick Jackson spoke with Nancy Levin, the director of the Heights Libraries; Amy Rosenbluth, executive director of Lake Erie Ink, one of the Coventry School tenants; and attorney Lee Chilcote, who represents the tenants and helped engineer the deal.
