Larry Doby

To Clevelanders of a certain age – especially those who follow baseball, Larry Doby's name is revered.

It was 70 years ago this week... July 5th… when Doby became the second African American in the 20th century, to step onto a major league baseball field; 11 weeks after the far more celebrated debut of Jackie Robinson.

More than as a statue outside Progressive Field, more than his being a seven time all-star... Doby is an icon; a man who - with Cleveland's aid - helped shepherd a new period of understanding and tolerance into this city.

In some sections of this city – that will be noted this month.

But to many in Cleveland, commemoration will go as unnoticed as a new pothole...

and that's a shame.
