Ohio prisons overcrowded: State Sen. Eklund proposes reforms to lower prison population

There was legislation introduced last week in the general assembly that could result in fewer Ohioans convicted of non-violent crimes serving jail time.

The bipartisan bill would add to the efforts of reducing the state's high prison population, 'and' placing more focus on rehabilitation.
Each of these stars indicates a prison facility and within them Ohio currently houses about 50,350 inmates, according to the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

That is 130 percent of the prisons' capacity.

Rick Jackson sat down with bill co-sponsor John Eklund. He's the state senator who represents parts of Geauga and Lake counties and all of Portage county.
Rick began by asking the senator about his motivation to push for this change.
