Newsmaker: Maureen O’Connor, Chief Justice, Ohio Supreme Court
O’Connor calls for a review of the way Ohioans elect their judiciary. She acknowledges voters have made it clear they wish to retain the right to elect judges rather than have them appointed. But she says election results show many voters simply pass over the judicial races and she thinks few who cast ballots do so with any knowledge of the candidates. She’s asking for feedback on ideas for improvement such as holding judicial elections in odd years, giving judicial races a more prominent spot on the ballot and increasing the qualifications for judges.
