Dozens of House Republicans gathered in a closed-door meeting to talk about the future of their caucus after a fight over who will lead the chamber.

Rep. Jason Stephens (R-Kitts Hill) defeated Rep. Derrick Merrin (R-Monclova) in the vote to serve as House Speaker for the 135th General Assembly.

There are suggestions from both Republican and Democrat sources that the secret ballot vote for Ohio House speaker may not reelect Derek Merrin.

Merrin, who has served in the Ohio House since August 2016, currently chairs the ways and means committee.

In a historic vote, the Ohio House has removed a former Speaker who was re-elected to his seat last fall, after he was arrested in what's considered the largest bribery case ever in Ohio government.
