Pakistani American Shammas Malik is set to become Akron's first racial minority to serve as mayor.

Candidates to be the next mayor of Akron took to the stage on Wednesday for the first debate of the campaign. The seven candidates fielded a variety of questions, from policing to pubic safety to education.

Marco Sommerville, currently a deputy mayor in Mayor Dan Horrigan's administration, said the comment was "a terrible slip to make."

A new survey shows that Akron residents want a new mayor focused on gun violence, crime, police reform and education.

Mosley is in her third term on city council and previously served as a bailiff in the Akron Municipal Court.

The council underwent three days of hearings before the budget committee last week and is expected to make a decision today.
