Former Lorain City Schools Superintendent Jeff Graham will return to the embattled school district as the new CEO after a 5-0 Wednesday night vote of the district's Academic Distress Commission (ADC). Graham, currently the Canton City Schools superintendent, beat out Galion City Schools Superintendent James Grubbs Jr. and Tracy Reed, the chief academic officer of Fort Wayne Community Schools in Indiana, for the position. Graham previously held the position of the Lorain schools superintendent until the state takeover in 2017.

The three finalists for CEO of state-controlled Lorain City Schools will have an opportunity to differentiate themselves from the other candidates Tuesday night. They will convene for a public forum over Zoom and answer pre-written questions from a committee of community members.

Lorain is under new leadership and for the city’s new mayor, that meant asking someone to let him in the city hall door. “Our chief here has also been very helpful. He got me actually into the building on January first,” said Lorain Mayor Jack Bradley referring to the new police chief sitting beside him. “And so, it’s been a learning experience.” Mayor Bradley, Chief James McCann and Lorain Schools interim CEO Greg Ring answered questions from residents at the 20 th annual Speak Up & Speak Out forum at Lorain City Hall Saturday afternoon.

The Lorain City School Board and Academic Distress commission appointed former county superintendent Greg Ring to be interim CEO of Lorain City Schools at a joint meeting Wednesday night. The district terminated its contract with current CEO David Hardy Jr. after difficulties with communication and management, including a dispute over employee pay. Hardy’s last day is Jan. 3.
