Budget cuts

The Youngstown City School District financial forecast shows it running out of cash completely by the 2026-27 school year.

The institution has seen enrollment declines and is using $9 million from its reserves to pay for the retirement incentive program, meant to help the college cut costs in the long run.

The plan calling for more than $130 million in cuts was approved by the Cleveland Metropolitan School District Board of Education Tuesday. It focuses on cutting back multiple pandemic-relief funded programs that officials say tries to prevent cuts from reaching the doors of classrooms.

Kent State University’s president said in an address Tuesday that the university will need to reduce its spending by tens of millions of dollars over the next few years, which could mean cuts to programs and to staff.

As it looks to cut tens of millions to present a balanced budget to the state, Cleveland Metropolitan School District administration is considering some layoffs and cuts to after-school and summer learning programs, in a draft plan presented Tuesday to the Board of Education.
