Akron Innerbelt

The failed highway project tore apart a primarily Black community in the 1970s, according to the city. The Ohio Department of Transportation vacated a portion of the highway and returned it to the city in 2016.

A vibrant neighborhood which was home to many African American families was wiped out in the 1970's to make way for the Innerbelt. The highway, which was never fully built and was underused, was finally decommissioned in 2018.

The Reconnecting Our Community initiative is a project that will decide what to do with the decommissioned innerbelt through community engagement.
