A 34-year-old man from Mexico died early Thursday morning at a local hospital after being held in immigration detention in Youngstown, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Staff at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center found David Hernandez Colula unresponsive in his cell. He was taken to Mercy Health-St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital and pronounced dead at 1:49 a.m.
The initial cause of death was apparent suicide, according to a Friday ICE press release. The agency said the death remains under investigation.
The police department in Sturgis, Mich., arrested Colula Dec. 4 on an outstanding warrant, according to the release. ICE took him into custody two days later and he was transferred to Youngstown on Dec. 9.
He had been released on bond in December 2014 after an arrest by U.S. Border Patrol.
ICE notified the Mexican consulate and Colulua’s next of kin, the agency said.
The Northeast Ohio Correctional Center is a private prison in Youngstown owned by CoreCivic.
