MetroHealth announced Tuesday a $42 million gift, which it says is the largest in the hospital system’s 183-year history.

The funds from JoAnn and Bob Glick will go toward MetroHealth’s community health programs, especially the needs of women and children.

MetroHealth officials said they have focused efforts on impacting health through providing resources like job training, housing, and fresh food.

“We hope our gift can begin to change the dynamics of health in Cleveland,” JoAnn Glick said in a statement.

“A person’s health and well-being depend on so much more than traditional medical care. MetroHealth understands that and is working to improve our community’s health in ways that go far beyond the four walls of a hospital or doctor’s office," she said.

Glick is a registered nurse who has worked in hospitals in Philadelphia and Cleveland.

Metrohealth will use the money to create two funds, the JoAnn and Bob Glick Fund for Healthy Communities and the JoAnn Zlotnick Glick Endowed Fund in Community Health Nursing.

The first fund will help community health programs with a focus on women and children, while the second fund will support nurses to help them impact health and health care in Cleveland, according to MetroHealth officials.

The $42 million donation may be the third-largest gift from individuals to a public hospital in the US, MetroHealth officials said.
