The view from the Idea Center
“Take a picture, it lasts longer!” Remember that schoolyard retort?
You used it to get someone to stop staring at you. Perhaps they were staring because they saw your underwear as you went down the slide in a skirt. Saying “take a picture, it lasts longer!” helped restore your dignity. (At least it did for me.)
In Mentor, a picture-taking initiative is helping schoolkids in a different way. Since attaching cameras to school buses in February, police say they’ve issued 10 times the number of citations for driving past a stopped school bus.
These maneuvers, intentional or not, are a real threat to kids’ safety. Earlier this year, two children in Willowick were struck by a car while exiting their school bus. They survived. Other children aren’t so lucky. In Indiana, twin boys and their older sister died last year after a driver of a pickup truck failed to stop for their school bus.
Ohio lawmakers are considering increasing penalties for drivers who ignore the law and drive past stopped school buses. The legislation would also provide money for more bus cameras, like the ones Mentor is using.
“Take a picture, it last longer!” isn’t just a way of restoring order on the playground. It may help restore order on the roadways . And keep kids safe.
See you bright and early on the radio tomorrow morning,
