The view from the Idea Center
The Super Guppy flew into Mansfield Airport on Sunday. No cape or magical powers were needed.
The Super Guppy isn’t a superhero. It’s a big, silver-skinned, wide-body cargo plane used by NASA to transport large spacecraft parts around the country.
On this particular mission, it was carrying the 25-ton Orion space capsule, which is on its way to NASA’s Plum Brook Station in Sandusky from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Orion is part of NASA’s latest effort to put people on the moon. The capsule will take astronauts to Lunar Gateway, a small spaceship that will orbit the moon and act as their “home-very-far-away-from-home.”
At Plum Brook, the Orion capsule will be subjected to four months of tests in extreme temperatures. Sandusky in winter is the perfect place for this.
Actually, any city along the shores of Lake Erie would do.
See you bright and early tomorrow morning on the radio,
