It’s the first week since General Motors cut its second shift at the plant in Lordstown that makes the Chevy Cruze.
The company told state officials in April that it would lay off 1,500 people. GM eliminated the third shift last year.
UAW Local 1112 president David Green said around 600 employees have already taken buyouts through GM’s attrition program.
Green said the state job and family services department will have people at the plant this week, and that help is available for some workers to go to school and get new training.
“Maybe to move into a different type of field of work,” Green said. “There’s also, the regional chamber [of commerce] here has put out a list of companies in the tri-county area that are hiring. So we’re trying to get that list to our members as well.”
Green said the Cruze market has suffered as crossovers and SUVs gain popularity with auto buyers.
