Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson plans to move the police headquarters into the former home of the Plain Dealer.
Jackson’s office announced the $60 million purchase and redevelopment Monday afternoon. GLP Superior Ltd., a company affiliated with developer Fred Geis, will be involved in the project.
Cleveland last year agreed to sell the current headquarters and city jail at the Justice Center to Cuyahoga County. According to a news release, the city picked the new site at 1801 Superior Ave. from two dozen possibilities.
The Plain Dealer moved to the address in the 1950s. The newspaper had the current structure built in 2000 and 2001 at a cost of $38 million.
Most newspaper staff moved to Tower City in 2014. The building now houses online sister company Cleveland.com. Cuyahoga County values the news organization’s building at $20 million.
Cleveland City Council’s safety committee will hold a hearing on the plan on Wednesday. The city expects work to finish up in spring of next year.
