Unheard-of Treasures: Music by Female Composers —trioW (Naxos 551438)
For Women’s History Month, WCLV presents the newest release from trioW. The ensemble—violinist Katharina Wimmer; cellist Stefan Welsch and pianist Ingrid Wendel—has a passion for the life and works of composers as famous these days as Clara Schumann and Amy Beach, but also as unfamiliar as the Swede Amanda Röntgen-Maier and the Budapest-born Croatian Dora Pejacevic. Some music by female composers were able to overcome historic institutional bias, but major pieces on this disc like the Violin Sonata in B minor by Röntgen-Maier and the Piano Trio Op 29 by Pejacevic on this disc fell into profoundly undeserved obscurity. Rounding out this eye- and ear-opening program are shorter pieces for accompanied violin and cello by Clara Schumann, Amy Beach and Lili Boulanger. Regard for the music included in Unheard-of Treasures is long overdue and the CD is yours with our thanks for a WCLV membership of just $6 a month as a sustaining member.
