Tuesday was the two-year anniversary of the police shooting of Tamir Rice. To commemorate the date, the local chapter of Black Lives Matter organized a 12-hour sit-in at a police station on Cleveland’s west side.
About two dozen demonstrators arrived at Cleveland’s First District Police Station early in the morning, planning on a sit-in inside the station. Locked doors prevented them from going inside. So instead they spent the day on the front steps.
At about five in the afternoon, Tamir Rice’s mother, Samaria Rice, arrived to make a statement.
“Two years, too long, I have no justice, many, many sleepless nights. I don’t know how they think I’m supposed to go on. I’m still raising children and I still have not had no sleep for the last two years," said Rice.
Rice called for the firing of the two officers involved in the fatal shooting of her 12-year-old son and murder charges by incoming Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley. She also demanded a meeting with US Attorney General Loretta Lynch before the Obama Administration leaves office in January.
