A proposed ordinance to increase Cleveland’s minimum wage to fifteen dollars is headed for city council consideration, The measure will be introduced at Monday’s city council meeting.
The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections verified almost twelve thousand of the signatures submitted last week by the labor-backed group Raise Up Cleveland. Only 5,000 were needed to get the ordinance in front of city council.
If passed, the citywide minimum wage would get a bump from $8.10 an hour to $15.00 an hour. The change would take effect January 1st. A nationwide movement has had success with a slower transition to $15.00 an hour. In California, wages will reach that level in 2022. In New York City, it’ll be 2018. And in Seattle, only large employers will pay fifteen dollars in 2018, the rest have until 2021.
The proposed wage increase will be introduced at Monday’s city council meeting before being referred to committee for discussion.
