Ohio is one of several states to discuss the possibility of repealing the Common Core education standards.
Education Secretary Arne Duncan—who was in Columbus for the National Rural Education Forum—says the standards appropriately set the bar higher to ensure students are college- and career-ready—something—he says wasn’t happening under the old standards.
“To have young people who work hard—who play by the rules—who complete high school walk across that stage and are woefully—inadequately prepared to take the next step in their education journey that’s not fair to them that’s not fair to their families that’s not the right thing for the nation.”
Ohio lawmakers against the Common Core say it invites too much interference from the federal government.
Duncan says he feels the decision to keep the standards or not should be made on the state level.
