Jackson Budget: Boosted Police Presence

Jackson plans to hire 30 additional police officers by year's end and close one of the city's six police districts to help improve efficiency. Closing the district has some unhappy, especially Councilman Joe Cimperman, whose ward would lose the station. But others like Councilwoman Sabra Pierce Scott say the mayor has her vote of confidence.

Sabra Pierce Scott: He has done a very good job in explaining again, and again, and again that this is the program and process that he has in place in order to get more officers out on the street to us with safety.

The 2007 plan also sets aside $6 million to the demolition of run down and abandoned homes. City Council will continue budget hearings over the next two weeks.
