The charges against seven East Cleveland police officers include felonious assault and interference with civil rights.

Council has previously voted, twice, to appoint Lateek Shabazz to the open ward three seat, but Councilmember Nathaniel Martin appointed Mark McClain to the seat today.

On Tuesday, East Cleveland City Council filled the vacant ward three seat for the second time this month.

The suit alleges that Council President Nathaniel Martin illegally acted unilaterally without the support of council and was aided by clerk of council Tracy Udrija-Peters.

An effort to recall Mayor Brandon King is on the ballot on Tuesday.

The officers, Willie Sims and Alfonzo Cole, allegedly stole from people they had pulled over or during calls for service during 2020 and 2021.

The 10-year levy will appear as Issue 5 on Cuyahoga County ballots and Issue 10 in Hinckley Township. Unlike renewals, levy replacements consider the increase in a home’s value since the last new levy passed.

Cleveland City Council President Blaine Griffin says he is not breaking ranks with fellow Democrats to support Gov. Mike DeWine, despite a flyer that surfaced Wednesday listing him as part of a host committee for a fundraiser for the Republican governor.

The charges include failure to pay taxes for years, theft and tampering with records.

The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections on Thursday certified that the campaign had gathered 322 valid signatures, just more than the 311 needed to force the issue. Under East Cleveland charter, King has until Aug. 18 to resign or face a recall vote.
