Cleveland plans to replace all of the city's 61,000 street lights at a cost of $25 million. The new light fixtures can also hold additional hardware – like police cameras or air and traffic monitors – could be attached. But in front of city council's finance committee on Monday was only an ordinance to cover the cost of the light fixtures.
That bothered city councilman Kerry McCormack.
“While we’re touching the poles, we should take a look at what other technology can be implemented, that has cameras, as well as another suite of smart city technology," said McCormack.
City officials countered that those other attachments could be added later.
According to the city's Director of Public Utilities, Robert L. Davis, the city has already chosen a company to provide the lighting and are waiting for legislation to sign the contract.
City council’s finance committee will continue discussion at its meeting next week.
