America's Veterans explores who are veterans, how and why we honor them, what can we learn from the lives of veterans, and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. The program features 12-year-old Lizzie who, through her Marine veteran grandfather, discovers the answers to these questions, and also features four more veterans who tell their stories which are expanded to include all veterans. The program concludes with a small town Veterans Day parade. The video program complements and enriches the treatment of Veterans Day found in most American history textbooks. Teachers of younger grades should preview the program first to determine if the few images of war and injury would be disturbing for their students. The two websites listed above contain educational materials about Veteran's Day, America's flag, and other citizenship issues.
